“Daily Yahoo” Subscription

Confirmation message before unsubscribing from the Daily Yahoo newsletter

This bothers me on several levels.

Dear philipchung1995,

There's no need to trim down your inbox because Yahoo Mail gives you 1000GB of storage. However, if still want to unsubscribe from Daily Yahoo, just know that you can always sign back up at any time so you won't miss out on a personalized mix of the top stories and breaking news delivered to your inbox every morning.

Are you sure you want to unsubscribe from Daily Yahoo?

No, cancel

Yes, unsubscribe from this newsletter

Yes, unsubscribe from all marketing messages

First is the fact that I even had to unsubscribe in the first place. I don’t remember ever signing up for this newsletter or even receiving it before. It just started showing up in my inbox.

Second is a bit of a “dark pattern,” making the option they want you to click more prominent than the others (in this case, a big button to stay subscribed as opposed to the links to unsubscribe). I say a bit because it’s nowhere near the number of hoops some sites make you jump through to, say, close your account.

Finally, there’s that ridiculous first sentence. Hmm, can you think of any other reasons why someone would want to clean their inbox and reduce the number of e-maiks they get? I bet even the person who wrote that, who probably has to deal with their own slew of e-mails, can think of a few.
